Audrey Hepburn’s Chocolate Cake

Audrey’s cake looked delightful as I was making it

Not so much when it came out of the oven, though…

I have made Audrey’s cake twice.  The first time I burned it too. I blamed the oven in my old Muswell Hill flat, which always ran hot.  I always had to set the temperature dial 40 degrees lower than whatever was specified, which accounts for my scribbled note on the recipe.

But this time, burning it again, I concluded that the temperature in the recipe might be incorrect.  So proceed with caution!  From a little tour around the internet, 375℉/190℃ looks to be standard for this sort of cake.

Luckily, the second time I burned it, my best buddy Battenburg Belle was in residence and she suggested that we peel all the burned bits off and turn some of the cake into individual trifles!

With a tin of custard, BB picked up from the corner shop, some crumbled amaretti biscuits, some toasted almonds, a drizzle of cream and a little bit of Kahlua I had on hand for a Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor Giant Martini

all was not lost!  The trifles were SPECTACULAR!

Burned a cake? TRIFLE IT!

  1. Ah yes, the “on no burnt chocolate cake (or brownie) save the middle parts!” maneuver! I am sadly familiar. Usually I just plop frozen yogurt on top of rescued bits, but trifle certainly looks to me like the more than acceptable, fancy-pants and delicious option!

    1. Everyone loves a trifle VT! In fact, I am having friends to dinner on Friday and that’s what we’ll have for pudding – if I can find the trifle dish… It doesn’t have a set place to live as I only use it occasionally, it could be anywhere… I do like the idea of frozen yogurt though… I wish I had some because it is breakfast time and I am STARVING!

  3. Oh no! I’ve burned some recipes multiple times, and it’s always so sad! At least you got to enjoy part of it.

Since it’s described as a “thin, flourless cake” I’m pretty confident I’d burn it too, (even with your notes) so I’ll just enjoy the photos.

    1. This might be a wise decision, A. I am sure I will give this another try sometime as it IS delicious, but I’ll just cook at a lower temperate – if I remember – haha!
