Cher’s Hawaiian Meatballs American Style

Man alive these were good!  I had to test them for this February’s shebang over on my Dinner and a Movie Substack.  I’m proposing a Cher movie.  I wonder if you can guess which one? Want a clue?

I’d made this recipe once before, but I hadn’t read it right and got the wrong kind of pineapple.  When shopping for the ingredients I almost made the same mistake again because I think the key to the sauce is that you must scour the supermarket for pineapple IN SYRUP.  My online delivery service had many different brands and styles of pineapple in tins but they were all in juice.  What has happened in this country?!  I had to pay a pretty penny for these posh ones, but it was worth it.

Here’s the recipe, and below it a few pix and tips.

The divine Mr R has put together a playlist for the divine Cher which you can find by clicking on this link and it was PERFECT to have playing as we put these meatballs together.  We kicked it off as we began chopping and mixing and when we sat down at the table, the last song on the list was playing.  So I heartily recommend having this on in the background as you cook.  It might take you a bit longer if you are cooking alone, but I highly recommend recruiting a Ball Roller General.

I used panko breadcrumbs and almond milk as that’s what I had around the place.  The meatballs had a lovely soft consistency.  Bingo!

We halved the recipe and ended up with 22 meatballs.  Enough for 2 meals for 2 so I would say if you are making the whole recipe you could easily serve 8 with this, but I would probably make a little extra of the sauce.

I used all the syrup from my 370g jar of pineapple for half the recipe and it seemed spot on.  I didn’t use all the pineapple though as I felt about 2/3 of it was enough.  Here’s what the sauce looked like under construction.

Here’s the finished dish.

It’s easy, and fun to make, especially if you have someone else in the kitchen and you make it together. Plus it is very lovely to have Cher singing away in the background.  I will be Cher-ing 3 extra Cher recipes via the Dinner and a Movie newsletter later in February too so do skip over there if you are a fan.

I will never tire of sharing this piece of gloriousness, so here it is again…
