I’ve been saving this for Coronation weekend and here it is.  In case you don’t know, there’s royal stuff going on in the UK tomorrow so if you are going to be toasting the new King or any other regal person in your life, here’s the ideal libation.

Here’s what you’ll need.

I had to buy a bottle of Dubonnet for this cocktail, I’m sure I have drunk this in France and now I have more than 3/4 of a bottle left to play with.

In the back of my mind I think this was a favourite tipple of the Queen Mother, so there’s another royal link for you.

Hang on, I’ll check.  YES!

Dubonnet was also a favourite of the Queen Mother and was given a Royal Warrant in November 2021. The 14.8% ABV French aperitif brand is owned by Pernod Ricard and made with a blend of fortified wine, herbs, and spices including black tea, quinine and blackcurrant.

Thanks Google!  Also, thanks Wikipedia…

Reputedly Dubonnet is a favourite beverage of:

  • Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, who liked gin and Dubonnet: 30% gin, 70% Dubonnet with a slice of lemon under the ice. She once noted before a trip, “I think that I will take two small bottles of Dubonnet and gin with me this morning, in case it is needed.”[8][9]
  • Queen Elizabeth II, who liked 66% Dubonnet and 33% gin with two cubes of ice and a lemon slice before lunch every day.[10]

Before lunch every day!  I like her style and I’m going to try a straight gin and Dubonnet very soon.

I’d like to know more about Fanny Brice.  So far all I really know is that she liked Coronation Cocktails, Barbra Streisand played her in the movie, Funny Girl (1968)

and she’s in Ziegfeld Follies (1945).

Man that is a star-studded movie.  Maybe I’ll get hold of it that, and eat some cake!
