Keith Michell’s Broccolli with Pumpkin Seeds

Keith Michell wrote a cookbook, and it is a thing of great beauty and historical interest because firstly, it has amazing illustrations,

but secondly because it is all about macrobiotic cooking. Remember that?

I was thrilled to find out about this book as Keith is in LOTS of episodes of Murder, She Wrote so I needed some recipes from him for the Murder, She Cooked books.

But Keith’s book comes with a big disclaimer. I am not sure you could say that Keith was a great recipe writer. Two lovely friends tested recipes for me and they were both FAILS. Dee cracked me up on the day of my hen night by sending me photographs and a video of her failed attempts to make Keith’s Aduki, Rice and Sweet Corn Croquettes

And my lovely chum Pamela of the Silent London blog also had a mini-disaster in the kitchen with her attempts to make his Buckwheat Burgers. She sent me such a funny email that I decided to share it all with you in a blog post.

Not all film star recipes are good, and it’s annoying when they don’t work, as you will have spent time and money on making them, plus you would be looking forward to eating something nice, not something horrible. So thank you, Dee and Pamela, for being good sports and I am looking at Keith’s book again to see if I can find BETTER recipes for Volume 2 of Murder, She Cooked.

This one is not much of a recipe, but in a way, it’s a good recipe.  Because I’d never thought of such a simple way of pimping up some broccoli.  I eat a LOT of broccoli, it is the #1 vegetable around these parts

I made this ages ago but forgot all about it

Then I remembered the recipe again when I had some Tenderstem in the vegetable crisper at risk of going mouldy so I PLUCKED THEM OUT, steamed them, toasted up a handful of pumpkin seeds, and popped them on top.  I felt like the original gangsta!

Seen here next to some Mary Pickford Enchiladas – coming soon in the Top 100 Movie Star Recipes countdown – yum!
