Ron Masak’s Recipes

I was so sad to hear that Ron Masak had travelled to that Hollywood in the sky this week.  He was my favourite of all the Murder, She Wrote co-stars, playing the wonderful character of Sheriff Mort Metzger.

I am picturing Ron and Angela chatting over a cup of tea and homemade cookies at an exact replica of Jessica’s kitchen table up there right now.  I think I might have spent too much time on Second Life way back when…

Oh man, now I am wondering if some kind soul has created a whole virtual reality Cabot Cove on Second Life where you can go and hang out with Jessica, Mort, Seth, Amos, Loretta and all the other fabulous folk.  If this exists, I am done for, you might never hear from me again…

Aaaaaaarrrrrgggggg!  While I use all my willpower not to click VISIT, I thought I would share all of the Ron Masak recipes that are in the Murder, She Cooked book.

Ron’s recipes are GOOD!  I am especially fond of the Kabot Kove Kookies, for many reasons, but mainly because they are so easy!

Here we go…

There is also an Artichoke Pie recipe, I haven’t made this myself but my test cook Greg Swenson of Recipes for Rebels (who also designed the cover of the book) said of this, “We loved it. Alex used the word ‘Delicious’ at least eight times during supper,” so I am planning to try this one soon.

I have two more of Ron’s favourites in my collection.  The recipe for his Layered Mexican Bean Dip (this is soooooo good)

can be found in this blog post

Visiting that post reminded me that I once served the Chillies Rellenos, the Layered Mexican Bean Dip and the Taco Salad all together for my book group once. That was a GOOD MENU. Round it off with some Kabot Kove Kookies and you will have a perfect tribute dinner right there…

I have one other recipe from Ron’s kitchen which I have cooked before but never got around to writing about, his Albondigas Soup.  It’s destined for Volume 2 of Murder, She Cooked but I plan to make this again soon and have a little Ron tribute night on the sofa.  Do any Murder, She Wrote fans out there have a suggestion for the best of all the Ron episodes for me to watch?

At the moment I’m leaning towards Mr. Penroy’s Vacation as it’s when we first meet Mort.  He has relocated from the Big Apple and thinks Cabot Cove is a sleepy little town where nothing much happens.  My favourite line of his is when he tells the mayor he’s off to play golf and says, “If we should happen to be hit by a crime wave, Mr Mayor, I’ll be wearing my bleeper.” Hahahahaha – Mort will soon be sending these postcards to all his chums back there in New York City…

  1. I’ve always loved “A Body to Die For”. It’s a great episode as a mystery and has some great moments for the Sheriff.
