It was double days at my nephew’s brewery recently and I had an absolutely fab time. On Saturday I had my little pop-up bread and mustard shop,
I made some pumpkin fougasse to get in the Halloween mood.
Then on Monday myself, Ma Baker and Battenburgbelle got amongst it being “brewers for the day”.
This was a crowdfunding reward, my nephew has big plans for his taproom including an OVEN! I’m hoping to be able to teach beer bread making at the brewery. Wouldn’t that be a blast?!
Some of my bread – all made with beer!
Talking of ovens…. Ever since I saw this photo in the brilliant Dan Lepard book The Art of Handmade Bread
I always stick a big old potato in the oven when I am making bread for the brewery.
I think Pat’s method of jazzing it up is going to be the new standard.
Fishy potatoes!
Here is a brilliant song about baked potatoes…
I love Pat…
and I mentioned in a previous post that I have a top I always think of as my Pat Phoenix blouse, here it is!
And here are a few pix of our brilliant day at the brewery.

Kieron shines a light on proceedings…
A big THANK YOU goes out to Kieron who was so knowledgeable and made the day so much fun.
Thanks to everyone at Hammerton Brewery for making us so welcome and for buying us pizza!
If you haven’t yet been to the Brewery, check out their website for taproom opening times. There is also my own private club (!) the House of Hammerton on Holloway Road.
Only kidding, it’s a PUB, you don’t have to be a member!
I’ll keep y’all posted about bread making classes, it’s a goal for 2019 but I have to do some training with the Bread Angels first. I’m already booked in to help Liz (aka Ma Baker) on one of her courses in January. If you fancy learning about making real bread, check out the classes offered all over the country by the Bread Angels.
Your bread looks amazing- love the pumpkins! My daughter is working at a local small bakery at the moment and they made ghost boo-gasse.
I need to work on my bread making- sadly there are no Bread Angels near me so I’m going to have to add it to my evening class list!
Aw thanks Hazel! Ghost boo-gasse is such a great idea. Keep your eye on the Bread Angels site, there are new Angels springing up everywhere so you never know… If you fancy having a go on your own (I know from your blog that you are an accomplished cook!) the book I would highly recommend is Emmanuel Hadjiandreou’s How To Bake Bread – his walnut bread is my favourite of all bread I have made, and his olive bread is fabulous too. Mind you, I bet your house is full of bread if your daughter is working at a bakery!
It’s on my Christmas list, thank you for the suggestion 🙂
He’s such a lovely man too – went on his Christmas Baking course at the School of Artisan Food a couple of weeks ago and it was brilliant…
EVERYTHING about this post is absolutely wonderful! (well…except maybe that potato song…and the sardines on the potato…) Your breads are stunning! The pumpkin bread is adorable! The brewing day looks fantastic! Bread classes from you, sound like so much fun!
You don’t like the potato song?! It’s an ear-worm for sure. Yeah, I do so love making bread, selling it is fun too. People are always surprised that I’ve made it all in my ordinary domestic oven. I’m going to start planning my bread course. Going to be fun, you’ll have to come over!
