Peter Fonda’s Blender Breakfast

In the modern world, a “blender breakfast” might be better known as a smoothie.  Mmmmmm – this is so good.  I love it and I always feel very virtuous and slightly smug when I have one.  Here’s Peter’s original recipe

and here’s my version.  I use spirulina which makes it a lovely colour and I like the taste of it. Besides, I have no idea what Peter means by sea protein…

Because I have fiddled around with Peter’s recipe a little bit, I have renamed it the The Easy Rider Smoothie.  Sounds cooler than Blender Breakfast eh?

The Easy Rider Smoothie

1 banana (I have a few sliced up in my freezer because I want to be like the Pioneer Woman)

1 raw egg

1/2 cup almond milk (I have nothing against cow’s milk, but I like almond milk better)

1 tablespoon honey

1 teaspoon spirulina (please note, teaspoon, not tablespoon – not sure what sea protein tastes like, but a tablespoon sounds a lot)

1 teaspoon cacao powder (I bought this to make something for a vegan friend and have loads left)

1/2 tablespoon chia seeds (I don’t trust ’em, and I have big hands so a handful might be quite a lot)

1/4 – 1/2 cup blueberries (smudge on the original newspaper makes it difficult to know Peter’s recommendation)

I whizz it all up in my blender, pour it into a mighty glass and walk around the flat drinking it and feeling VERY SMUG AND PLEASED WITH MYSELF.

I have had these two mornings in a row, today’s one had carob powder in – I forgot it yesterday – and it’s an even nicer colour.

I’m getting intrigued by the idea of “protein shakes” since Jane Fonda introduced me to protein powder in a smoothie.  I think it is a very “movie star on the run, or dieting for a part” kind of meal replacement and Elizabeth Taylor seems keen on them for lunch in “Elizabeth Takes Off”.

As I am fundamentally a very lazy person, the idea of bunging loads of stuff in a blender and letting them have it with a blade is very appealing.  Liz puts malted milk in her “Protein Powder Drink” so I have some of this in my next Ocado order, I am guessing that’s what she means.

Will report back!

  1. Arrrgh! There it is again! “Lovely color” for upholstery…maybe. “Swamp green” just doesn’t whet my appetite…especially for breakfast. Glad it’s inspiring for you though…fortunately, there’s thousands of other recipes on the Silver Screen Suppers site to make, before I get around to trying this one! Lol. Love the posting!
