Ruth Gordon’s Zucchini Omelette

I found this in my drafts while I was looking for something else… This was written not long after we’d been through the Covid epidemic. I absolutely LOVE the creative energy and inventiveness of the Rebel Reel Cine Club so despite this post being OLD, OLD, OLD, I am sharing it in the hope that someone who reads it will be inspired to go out on their own, or with significant others to one of their events, or something similar in their local area. Creativity is the only way we are going to survive in these dark days!

TURN BACK THE CLOCKS…

The pandemic made me into a bit of a hermit, I still barely leave my flat and venture out onto the mean streets of London town, but I have made exceptions for the brilliant REBEL REEL CINE CLUB.  When I discovered that they were holding events at the wonderful Arthouse Cinema in Crouch End, which is just a hop-skip-and-a-jump away from Muswell Hill I decided to be brave.  I went on my own the first time.

They were screening Withnail & I and the bar was serving movie-specific cocktails – I went for the Presuming Ed’s Gimlet which was fab.

There was a special bingo game.

I had a blast.

The next time I went, I took Mr R.  This time it was Harold and Maude.  I cannot tell you how brilliant was to sit in a cinema full of people each concentrating very hard on recreating the image on this poster

on a beermat.  We were talked through it onscreen before the film by a fabulous artist and I was stupidly proud of our efforts.

Honestly, you could have heard a pin drop!

My third Rebel Reel Cine Club experience was Polyester.  I’ve long been a fan of John Waters movies, and if I am ever down in the dumps all I have to do is find the footage of Divine on a trampoline from Female Trouble and I am cured.

The best thing about Polyester presented by RRCC was…  SCRATCH AND SNIFF CARDS!  For reals!

Oh, and there were protest placards too!

We all went out on the street for an impromptu protest.  Crouch End was very confused…

I don’t have a recipe for Divine alas, but I do have one for Ruth Gordon.  So in tribute to the creativity of the RRCC and the fun they create for us, I rustled up Ruth’s omelette recently.  I love it.

Do check the Rebel Reel Cine Club website out. I highly recommend their fab nights out.  Go on your own, with a gang or with your significant other.  Fun guaranteed.

Here’s Ruth’s recipe…

Ruth Gordon’s Zucchini Omelet

3 tablespoons butter (see note above)
1 cup zucchini [courgette]
3 tablespoons diced onion
3 tablespoons diced green pepper
3 tablespoons diced celery
4 eggs, beaten

Saute zucchini, onion, pepper and celery until tender.  Slowly add beaten eggs and cook as for omelet.  Add salt and pepper to taste.

YIELD: 2 servings.
