Sophia Loren’s Pizza Alla Napoletana

I am at Brixiefest – Mr R’s new term for my self-imposed weekend of solitary writing and cooking.  I have a lot to do, not least make a PIE for Yinzerella’s annual Pieathalon challenge.  For the first of these last year I made Mile High Lemon Chiffon Pie and played the Vincent Price Co-Stars game with lovely Vic and Anna..

9a1j3I can’t tell you yet what my pie challenge is this year, all will be revealed on Memorial Day (May 25th);  All I can say is this, as I am all alone this weekend, if I eat this whole pie by myself I will give myself the most incredible sugar high ever, as I rarely eat sweet things…

And now I’ve just been down an internet black hole after asking myself, “I wonder if Eric ever did a *sugar high* photo?”

I shall explain.  When I first started using the internet, one of the first “blog” type things I followed was something called “Eric Conveys an Emotion”, I have no idea how I found it.  The concept was simple.  You could email Eric an emotion, and he’d take a photo of himself conveying it.  The one that springs to mind was this one…

Ice cream headache...
Ice cream headache…

The whole thing is completely daft but I loved it.  Doing something just because it was fun was a fairly new concept to me then, but not now of course!  I mostly do this blog just because it’s fun.  So anyhow, I just found Eric’s website again and it looks like he hasn’t’ been conveying emotions since 2008.  I wonder what became of him?

I guess this one will be the closest to how I’ll feel once I’ve made my pie…

all of which to say, doing the Piathalon is, to my mind, a similar undertaking.  I am doing it because it’s a fun thing to do.  Some people might think it is crazy to spend several hours making a pie that will probably never get eaten (well only a small slice of it probably) but I just say:

Me and Mr R had a few drinks in the legendary Quinns last night- they have finally fixed the broken glass in the front door and removed the slightly sinister whitewashing on the front windows.  Perhaps they are going to turn it into a gastro pub (ha ha!)

quinnsWhen we got back to my place we had more beers in the kitchen and danced around a bit to “Kimono My House” by Sparks – one of the first gifts Mr R gave me, I love it…

Then we made a Sophia Loren Pizza.  It was delicious.

The full recipe for Sophia’s pizza can be found here… Last night’s version was a sort of adaptation of Sophia’s suggested topping of marinara sauce, salami, mozzarella, dried sweet basil and parmesan with a little drizzle of olive oil.  Mmmmmmmmm x

Now – to the pie!

  1. I’m getting excited about the Piathalon too! You made me feel better that I’m not the only one who will probably end up wasting a lot of pie… It’s the fun that counts.
