Silver Screen Stars at the Horticultural Show – Vincent Price, Anne Baxter and Diana Dors

Oh, I forgot to say, I won the Guy Chester cookery cup!

I don’t want to rub it in too much with Battenburg Belle, as by rights, she should have scooped it.  We do not understand the scoring system and she got more firsts than I did.  But I guess the seconds and thirds added up…  So here’s a quick rundown of the things I made…

Back on form with Diana Dors' Easy Fruit Cake after last year's devastating comment from judges that it was a "little dry".

And a joint second prize for this savoury tart which I kind of made up on the spot - it had capers and Pepperdew peppers in.

This was a film star recipe but I can't for the life of me remember which star! I'll report back when I have found my notes (if I ever do...)

My spicy beetroot chutney got a Second. This was made to a lovely recipe by Paul Mercurio - yes, he of "show me your pasodoble" fame from Strictly Ballroom. It has HAMMERTON BEER in it.

It is so much fun competing in this show, BB and I text each other all through the day before and morning of the show about how all our baking is going, and there is friendly rivalry between us over the cup (it’s year two for me as the cup holder).  We are both on the committee now,

I got a tabard!

so if you are a resident of the Muswell Hill area and either bake, make jams and chutneys, have an allotment or beautiful garden, join us!  We’d love for all the tables to be absolutely heaving with competition entries at the next one.

Our Summer Show is on Saturday July 11th.  I’ll come back and post the cookery categories here when I have the schedule handy.  From memory I think it is sweet jelly, savoury jelly, cake made with fruit, cake made with vegetables and the best category of all – anything else you like…

Email me via the contact page if you’d like to get amongst it!  Wouldn’t you like something like this for your mantelpiece?
