Ten years of Pieathalon?!  AWESOME! I have participated in every single one and have made some bonkers pies for sure.  Last year I got the Saggitarius Hamburger Pie which was essentially a dome of meat inside a pastry case.

This year it was another MEATY one – a sort of inside-out version of the meat dome with a crust made of minced beef and a filling of chopped-up hash browns – yippee.

When the recipe landed in my inbox, I thought, “Oh, goodie!  This one looks delicious.” Which it was.  The best thing about being awarded this recipe was the discovery that my brand new corner shop sells frozen hash browns as well as my beloved Birds Eye Potato Waffles.

So now I have half a bag of hash browns in my freezer as well as potato waffles. Yippee. Here’s my meat pastry…

I wasn’t sure if a “bag of hash brown potatoes” in the US would have been loose choppy bits of potatoes or moulded shapes like they are in the UK.  So I chopped mine up.

With lashings of butter and lots of cheese on top, how could this fail not to be delicious?

The tomato sauce was good too.

I might try topping a pie with some chopped-up potato waffles now I’ve seen how brilliantly it works with hash browns!  How wonderful to have discovered a kitchen hack thanks to the Pieathalon.

I’ll be adding links to all the Pieathalon posts as the Pieathletes post ’em up, so keep your eyes peeled.

I wonder who got my selection, the Anthony Hopkins 4-Star Shepherd’s Pie. I’m not sure why his recipe isn’t a 5-Star Shepherd’s Pie, but I do hope it was served with some fava beans and a nice chianti.
