Ten years of Pieathalon?! AWESOME! I have participated in every single one and have made some bonkers pies for sure. Last year I got the Saggitarius Hamburger Pie which was essentially a dome of meat inside a pastry case.
This year it was another MEATY one – a sort of inside-out version of the meat dome with a crust made of minced beef and a filling of chopped-up hash browns – yippee.
When the recipe landed in my inbox, I thought, “Oh, goodie! This one looks delicious.” Which it was. The best thing about being awarded this recipe was the discovery that my brand new corner shop sells frozen hash browns as well as my beloved Birds Eye Potato Waffles.
So now I have half a bag of hash browns in my freezer as well as potato waffles. Yippee. Here’s my meat pastry…
I wasn’t sure if a “bag of hash brown potatoes” in the US would have been loose choppy bits of potatoes or moulded shapes like they are in the UK. So I chopped mine up.
With lashings of butter and lots of cheese on top, how could this fail not to be delicious?
The tomato sauce was good too.
I might try topping a pie with some chopped-up potato waffles now I’ve seen how brilliantly it works with hash browns! How wonderful to have discovered a kitchen hack thanks to the Pieathalon.
I’ll be adding links to all the Pieathalon posts as the Pieathletes post ’em up, so keep your eyes peeled.
I wonder who got my selection, the Anthony Hopkins 4-Star Shepherd’s Pie. I’m not sure why his recipe isn’t a 5-Star Shepherd’s Pie, but I do hope it was served with some fava beans and a nice chianti.

What a fun idea!!! Love this! xx
It was DELICIOUS Taryn!
I am speechless! But I can see beef and hash browns being a delicious dinner.
So easy, so good. Do it Camilla!
I am so very happy that finding hash browns wasn’t difficult.
I don’t believe that waffle fries are fries, but if said potato waffle was selling itself as potato waffle and not fries–I could be tempted to try them.
I’m glad that the pie I gave you was a success. You gotta love the MEATS people at Southern Living Magazine.
Said potato waffle is definitely marketing itself as a waffle. There was a brilliant TV ad in the 1970s which is a total earworm… https://youtu.be/8IP8pgAlrwo?si=yV-niyYJO0sX2iVv – I want to know how those MEATS people got the olives into the middle of that huge joint of beef…
That looks really good! And now I want to know why we don’t have BirdsEye potato waffles over here!
You don’t?! That’s an OUTRAGE! I wonder how they would fare in the post…
Oh wow that looks so good.
Those frozen potato waffles don’t seem to be a thing on this side of the Atlantic and now I feel deprived!
S S – I am AMAZED that you can’t get these on your side of the pond. Call up your biggest frozen food manufacturer and tip them off to this enormous gap in the market!
We have both molded hash browns and loose choppy ones in the States, so I would have wondered which ones too. It’s hard to mix the patty-type with other things, though, so I’m sure you made the right call in chopping them up. It’s always nice to have an excuse to eat hash browns.
Thanks Poppy! I am exceedingly pleased to have most of an enormous bag of hash browns left at my disposal in the freezer. Yum.
The pie looks delicious! Here in the US, we have both the loose potato pieces and the molded ones. I’m betting they meant the loose ones, like the way you did it.
Thanks A – I’m glad I made the right decision. The pie really was delicious and I feel very smug to know there is still a huge piece of it in the freezer. That will be a treat in the autumn sometime…
Sometimes you see a recipe you know you have to cook immediately! And that’s one. I love hash browns ! Think I might use molded ones though and serve with baked beans and an egg . That’s got classic tea time fodder written all over it ! Will report back.
Do it Mark!
I did it ! It was delicious ! Forgot the breadcrumbs and milk to bind the mince but did not miss it and put some finely chopped red pepper in with mince & onion mix, etc .. What a great supper . Hooray for pieathlon, i love it .
YAY! So pleased that you enjoyed the pie Mark, Pieathalon brings joy to the world for sure!
