2nd recipe for Mogen David week was Xavier’s Samba Sauce. Surprise, surprise, this was good too! I used button chestnut mushrooms and the sauce looked cute, and tasted lovely. I think the Worcestershire sauce was the key ingredient in smoothing out the Mogen David. I used sweet paprika, but I’m guessing Xavier would have used hot paprika.
Xavier is best know as a bandleader, he popularised the rhumba in America, and I do love a fruity rhumba don’t you?! He also has 32 credits as an actor on the IMDB and I plan to track down a copy of Luxury Liner for a start. I love films that are set on board ocean liners… Oh the GLAMOUR.
Here’s Xavier’s recipe.
I would say there is enough sauce here for two dishes. I used the half on a nice juicy sirloin.
And the rest beside my massive slice of Theodore Bikel’s Glorified Meatloaf, it was the perfect accompaniment.
I think Xavier’s Samba Sauce would be lovely with any red wine, but of course, it is MOGEN DAVID WEEK!
Mogen David Week is dedicated to the lovely Caroline Frick who kindly brought two bottles of this legendary beverage from Texas to London just so I could make these 3 movie star recipes.

For films on cruise ships also try ‘Big Broadcast of 1938’ .
Oh brilliant – thanks for that tip Mark! My favourite is Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, followed by Jessie Matthews in Gangway. A SOHO GIRL!!
